High Cholesterol Q & A

What is cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a fatty substance that your liver produces naturally. It's also present in many foods, especially meats and dairy products.

A certain (small) amount of cholesterol is necessary for healthy bodily function, but an excess of cholesterol leads to serious health risks, including coronary artery disease, heart attack, and stroke.

What is a high cholesterol number?

High cholesterol means you have a total cholesterol number higher than 200 mg/dL. There are two kinds of cholesterol: high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL).

HDL, or "good" cholesterol, takes the "bad" cholesterol (LDL) out of your blood. High levels of LDL in your blood lead to plaque deposits and possible artery narrowing. Your total cholesterol number is a combination of your HDL and LDL.

What should be my target cholesterol level?

Adults over age 20 should have a total cholesterol number of 125-200 mg/dL, with the lower part of that range being more optimal. Your LDL should be less than 100 mg/dL. For men, HDL should be 40 mg/dL or higher, and for women, HDL should be 30 mg/dL or higher.

For anyone age 19 and under, total cholesterol should be lower than 170 mg/dL, with LDL of less than 110 mg/dL and HDL of greater than 45 mg/dL.
